Swirly Sgraffito

Give your kitchen a taste of swirly sgraffito with pieces from the Duncan® Oh Four™ Chef Collection! Decorate each piece in scrumptious colors from Concepts® Underglazes and Crackles™ Glazes.

Instructions

1. Wipe caddy and mug with dampened sponge to remove bisque dust.

Chef’s Mug:

  1. Measure 2” up from bottom of mug. Draw a light line around mug at this point with pencil.
  2. Pour a puddle of Bright Brown onto foil or paint palette. Using Fan Glaze brush, coat inside of cup with three coats, letting dry between each application. Let dry.
  3. Use the No. 8 Round to paint three coats of Bright Brown on handle, letting dry between coats. Let dry.
  4. Pour a puddle of Light Ginger on foil/palette. Paint two coats around marked off base of cup, letting dry between each coat. Let dry.
  5. Paint one good coat of Bright Brown on top of the Light Ginger. Let dry to where color has lost its sheen but is still slightly damp.
  6. While color is still slightly damp, use Sgraffito-Duster tool to carve in design as shown, carving through just the top layer of Bright Brown so Light Ginger shows through. Use bristles on opposite side of tool to dust off color crumbs. Let dry.
  7. Pour a puddle of Light Blue Spruce on foil/palette. Paint remaining top portion of cup with three coats, letting dry between each application. Let dry.
  8. Paint bottom of cup with three coats of Bright Brown, letting dry between each coat. Let dry.
  9. Carefully brush on one coat of Pure Brilliance™ Clear Glaze onto entire cup. Let dry.

Chef’s Caddy:

  1. Measure 4” up from bottom and draw a line around caddy. Measure approximately ¼” to 3/8” above line and draw another line around caddy.
  2. Apply two coats of Light Ginger to top rim of caddy, letting dry between each coat. Brush a coat of Bright Brown over Light Ginger. Let dry to where color has lost its sheen but is still slightly damp.
  3. While color is still slightly damp, use Sgraffito-Duster tool to carve in design as shown, carving through just the top layer of Bright Brown so Light Ginger shows through. Use bristles on opposite side of tool to dust off color crumbs. Let dry.
  4. Pour a puddle of Light Blue Spruce on foil and paint three coats on top portion of caddy, letting dry between each coat.
  5. Using Liner brush, paint in stripe with three coats of Bright Brown, letting dry between coats.
  6. Paint the underside of rim with three coats of Bright Brown. Let dry.
  7. Shake bottle of Parchment Crackle well. Apply two coats to the remaining bottom portion of caddy, letting dry between coats. Let dry.
  8. Lightly brush one coat of Pure Brilliance™ Clear Glaze to the top portion of caddy only; do not apply to Parchment Crackle area. Let dry.
  9. Stilt cup and caddy in kiln and fire to witness cone 06.
