Hand-Built Flower and Vase

Create your own big and bold ceramic flower and wrapped wine cooler vase—fresh, funky and fun to decorate with EZ Stroke™ Translucent Underglazes.

Instructions

  1. Prepare a clean, strong work surface (such as a large table or you can even use a clean floor).
  2. Open bag of clay and place on work surface. Pound clay onto surface to get rid of any bubbles. You can work in small amounts of clay if too heavy to handle.
  3. Use a rolling pin to help create a larger clay slab.
  4. Use the trowel to smooth out the top surface of the clay body. At this point, you may see some bubbles. You must try to get rid of all bubbles, because bubbles may cause your clay piece to explode during firing. Use Cleanup tool to cut slits through clay only where you see bubbles.
  5. Repeat process, pounding and kneading clay, then smoothing it out. When you don’t see any more bubbles, you can create your project.
  6. You can use a pattern to help create the flower, or create your own shape. Create flower petals individually. Place pattern over the clay. Use Cleanup tool to trace and cut pattern into clay.
  7. To create ruffled edges around petals, gently “tear” along outer edge of petal with fingertips.
  8. Use Sgraffito-Duster™ tool to press detail lines into each petal.
  9. Create 5 or 6 petals to create a flower.
  10. Use Cleanup tool to cut out a round circle for flower center.
  11. Use a pencil to gently poke small indentations into clay circle to create texture.
  12. Keep all flower pieces covered with plastic wrap to protect them from drying too quickly. Quick drying will cause clay to crack.
  13. After all pieces are completely dry, gently wipe with sponge to remove small clay particles and any dust that may have settled on clay pieces.
  14. Bisque fire to shelf cone 04.
  15. Wipe ware with damp sponge to remove any dust.
  16. Use Round Brush to apply 1 coat of Neon Orange to flower petals, starting from the narrow end of petals and brushing toward the top. Also apply 1 coat of Neon Red to petals, starting from wide end of petals and brushing toward center. Blend colors into each other. Let dry.
  17. Use Round brush to apply 1 coat of Neon Yellow to flower center of flower. Brush on Neon Orange highlights. Let dry.
  18. Thin Black with water to milk consistency. Use Round brush to apply 1 coat along wide edges of petals. Let dry.
  19. Pour Dark Black inside wine cooler, and roll inside until completely covered. Pour out excess.
  20. Apply 2 coats of Neon Red to wine cooler with Fan brush. Let dry.
  21. This technique creates a fun texture into the paint. Thin Black with water to a wash consistency. Use Fan Glaze brush to apply 1 coat to outside of wine cooler with Fan Glaze brush. While paint is still wet, quickly wrap plastic wrap around piece, scrunching the plastic a little to create pattern. Then, pull plastic wrap off piece right away. Let dry.
  22. Apply 2 coats of Clear to flower and outside of wine cooler with Fan Glaze brush. Let dry between coats.
  23. Arrange flower petals on stilts to fire together (this will fuse pieces together in the firing). Stilt wine cooler and glaze fire to shelf cone 06.
  24. To form a stem, run ceramic wire through openings between overlap sections of flower petals on back of flower. Wrap with covered wire.
  25. Wrap thin green florist wire around pencil to create coils. Place florist foam inside wine cooler. Push stem and coils through foam until flower stands within wine cooler. Wrap thin green wire around wine cooler to decorate.
