Blending Technique

The Blending Technique is a way to use your brush to pull in two colors into a soft, watercolor-like blended color mix. Great for florals, shading and two-tone effects.

Fish Press Technique

This technique uses fish bones to create a “fossilized” impression in clay. To prepare the bones, choose a large-boned fish (we used Bass) and bake in foil. Clean the bones to expose the skeleton for the press.

Glaze Spritzing Technique

Create dramatic artistic effects with Courtyard™ Art Glazes and this easy spritzing technique, using an ordinary spray bottle. You can also use Concepts® Underglazes for detailing the base-coated Courtyard™ color.

Glaze Thinning

Glazes can thicken over time. Fortunately glazes can be thinned with water or AS 957 Thin 'n Shade.

Halo Effect

Create the look of stoneware with this easy Halo Effect Technique, featuring Dark Black Concepts® Concepts® and Mediterranean Olive Courtyard™ Art Glaze. The Concepts® color reemerges in the firing and creates the Halo Effect in the Courtyard™ Glaze. See the Halo Technique step-by-step photos in our Education section.

Majolica

This technique involves the application of underglazes in design over unfired glaze.

Marbleizing

Create the look of marble with these steps.

Mask 'n Peel

Mask ‘n Peel® is a water-based emulsion made to protect design areas or colors when you’re applying another color near the same area. It works both under and between underglazes, glazes and acrylic colors. It’s especially good if you’re a beginning ceramist as you learn color and brush control.

Masterpiece in Minutes

Choose your vase and color combination. Add your lid. Create your masterpiece!

Rubbing Alcohol Technique

Have fun with science! Create circular patterns in layered glazes with drops of rubbing alcohol. Choose glazes in similar colors for subtle patterns, or create big impact with dramatically different glazes (Red and Black is a fabulous combination!).

Sgraffito Technique

Sgraffitoing is the method of creating a design by gently scratching through unfired underglaze color applied to the ware to reveal another color or the clay body beneath it. This technique is similar to incising, when you cut into an unpainted clay surface to create a design.

Spattering

Spattering is a quick and easy way to add color highlights over a painted design or a plain base coat.

Sponging on Bisque

Two easy steps to create beautiful sponging looks.

Stenciling on Bisque

Learn to stencil in four easy steps.

Sticker Stencil Technique

We used star stickers to get perfectly pointed star shapes! This technique works easily with multiples of any shape you choose.

Stippling

The Stippling Technique is a way of applying color by pouncing the tip of your BR 592 No. 10 Deerfoot Stippler brush loaded with color against the ware. This technique works great to create realistic foliage, flowers, grasses, cloud and water effects, and highlighting and shading.

It can be used with both underglazes and nonfired acrylic colors.

Texturizing Technique

Add fun texture to smooth bisque with this easy Texturizing Technique. The surprise ingredient to create natural texture for nonfired acrylic colors is baby powder!

Tinting snow

Create interesting dimension to your pieces by adding tinted snow. It's so easy to add color to your snow, just follow these easy steps.

Wax Resist Technique

Wax Resist is a wax emulsion created to repeal underglazes and glazes applied over it. The wax is burned off during firing, revealing the designs or base colors. Wax Resist also helps prevent chipping or peeling of color when creating sgraffitoed designs through opaque underglazes.
