In the late 1960’s, there was a long-awaited permission to leave traditional decorative processes in the professional ceramics world. Many artists looked to commercial products such as decals, lustres and low-fire glazes. My interest in ceramic sculpture included the use of color and a simplification of material. I went from stoneware to a low-fire clay body, so I could get a greater color range and reduce firing time and cost. I researched the market and found that Duncan ceramic products fit my needs perfectly. Keeping the process simple, I elected to work with Duncan’s Cover-Coat® Opaque Underglazes and GL 612 Diamond Clear Glaze.

I apply the underglaze colors directly on my semi-moist work just as I would an acrylic painting, mixing the color on the surface. What I see is what I get—what a wonderful break from using stoneware glazes and guessing at the outcome. The use of Duncan products gives me the freedom to concentrate on the essence of my work, the idea or message, and to keep the process direct without complication.

“I enjoy each step of the ceramic process—from sketching an idea, to hand building and shaping the clay, to the final touches of painting. What I have enjoyed most about working with Duncan Cover-Coats® is the intensity of color, most notably the neons. They give my work that pop of color that is very much in keeping with my style.

Color, shape, whimsy, surface decoration and functionality are all components of my pieces. I like that Cover-Coats allow for a variety of techniques and layered looks to give the pieces their final pop.”

As artists, we are dedicated to creating pottery, studying a wide range from ancient works to today’s 21st century greats, as well as a variety of cultural styles.

Our studio, The Potters Haven, Inc., is committed to creating items that the consumer desires. We are a small private studio whose goal is to provide the discriminating buyer with beautiful pottery to be proud of for use or display.

I also teach pottery, covering a full curriculum. As an educator, I believe it is absolutely imperative that students learn every technique available to them, as well as a complete history of pottery and its importance.

I incorporate Duncan Underglazes for detail work on cone 6 clay, and my husband, George, experiments with Duncan low-fire Glazes in Raku. I have used other companies’ low-fire products and they have never been able to reach the rich and deep qualities Duncan low-fire products achieve. To me, your underglazes and glazes enrich our works, as well as give my students reliable standards they need.

Sarah specializes in creating one-of-a-kind sculptural work – her trademark. Her extraordinary work features contemplative objects that inspire. After many years of working figuratively she is grateful to love the exploration of character through clay and color.

Sarah says, "Satin Glazes are rich and velvety to look at, they have easily repeatable results, I give them the highest rating among the low fire glazes."

As a ceramic artist who had made my own glazes for years, I discovered commercial glazes in my senior year of art school. This was an exciting new medium for me and I anxiously began trying them all. I made my choices based on test tiles supplied by each glaze company represented in my local craft store. After only a few years, my shelves stood witness to the glaze brand that I knew delivered the best color quality, firing constancy, and the widest spectrum of colors to select from. That brand was Duncan.

Duncan glazes are hands down the best on the market. Duncan has the best color quality and the widest spectrum of colors to choose from. Duncan's glazes fire consistently every time. My sculptures are what they are today because of Duncan.

When it comes to my pieces, I most enjoy the construction, manipulating the surfaces and applying decoration. Duncan products allow me the freedom to focus on those parts of the process I love best. EZ Strokes™ are the backbone of my color palette. Using them on greenware and bisque, both full strength and as diluted washes, allows me to build up layers of color. With their broad range of colors, effects and compatibility, Duncan products give me the flexibility to mix and explore a great variety of combinations.

I grew up on a farm in northeast Nebraska. Ceramic art satisfies my need to create things both beautiful and useful; as such, the medium allows me to remain true to both my own desires for expression and to my practical rural background. The landscapes of the Great Plains, several years in the landscape business, and the seasonal comings and goings of the insects, flora and fauna in my backyard are my primary sources of inspiration. My most basic requirement for my work is that I continue to enjoy making it.

CONTROL IS EVERYTHING IN ART

The reason I chose Duncan back in 1989 and continue to choose Duncan now is simply reliability and dependability.

As an artist who needs to achieve accurate results, I need to rely on a glaze that will not change color or value from batch to batch. While teaching Elementary children to create their mural from a color sketch I composed, it is critical that color chip I made with this specific glaze 5 years ago match the glaze in the bottle I bought yesterday.

Any serious artist needs control to produce a desired result, and Duncan’s meticulous quality control assures me dependability.

“I’m very taken with the workability and layering I can achieve with Duncan Courtyard™ Art Glazes. As a painter and photographer, I am always working with layering color and texture. With the Courtyard Art Glazes, I’m able to achieve textural layering and rich colorations on three-dimensional clay objects. These glazes offer great versatility and performance. They enable me to focus on the ceramic form and not worry about the performance of the glaze.”
